Cannes 2012 is going to be an exciting festival for the UK film industry with seven British films now announced in the Official Selection. In Competition is The Angels' Share directed by Ken Loach, written by Paul Laverty and produced by Rebecca O'Brien of Sixteen Films. Ken Loach is a Cannes favourite having won the Palme d'Or with The Wind that Shakes the Barley followed by official selections for both Route Irish and Looking for Eric. Co-funded by the BFI's Film Fund and to be distributed in the UK by eOne, The Angels' Share was shot entirely in Scotland and stars Roger Allam (The Woman In Black), John Henshaw (Red Riding), David Goodall (Red Road) and William Ruane (Sweet Sixteen). Sightseers directed by Ben Wheatley (Kill List) screens in the Directors' Fortnight. Produced by Big Talk Pictures, Rook Films and StudioCanal, and co-funded by Film4 and the BFI's Film Fund, the film is co-written by, and stars, Alice Lowe (Hot Fuzz) and Steve Oram (It's All Gone Pete Tong). The Curse, directed by Fyzal Boulifa and produced by Gavin Humphries for Quark Films and co-financed by Film4 and the BFI Film Fund, screens in the Directors' Fortnight short film section. Head Over Heels directed by Timothy Reckart from the National Film and Television School, screens in the Cinéfondation. The Critics' Week opens with Broken, marking the film directorial debut of award-winning theatre director Rufus Norris (London Road, Festen). Written by Irish writer Mark O'Rowe, Broken is financed by BBC Films and the BFI Film Fund and stars Tim Roth (The Incredible Hulk), Cillian Murphy (Inception), Rory Kinnear (Skyfall) and Robert Emms (War Horse). Screening in Cannes Classics is Me & Me Dad, a British documentary about the iconic filmmaker John Boorman (Excalibur, Hope & Glory) made by his daughter Katrine Boorman (Marie Antoinette), and produced by Mel Agace, as well as a newly restored print of Alfred Hitchcock's The Ring (1927). The Cannes screening of The Ring will be a curtain-raiser for the BFI's summer blockbuster The Genius of Hitchcock which includes screenings of the new BFI restorations of all nine of Hitchcock's surviving silent films. Receiving a Cannes Special Screening is Trashed from UK filmmaker Candida Brady about the environment and featuring actor Jeremy Irons as he travels around the world looking the problem of dealing with rubbish. Many of this year's international films also feature UK talent who will be walking the Cannes red carpet including actors Sam Riley and Tom Sturridge both in Walter Salles' On the Road; Tilda Swinton in Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom; Robert Pattinson and Samantha Morton in David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis; David Oyelowo in Paperboy; and Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman in John Hillcoat's Lawless.
